CIU ranked 64th in the World most sustainable university rankings
Cyprus International University (CIU) achieved great success by ranking 64th among 1477 universities in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings. CIU also proved its leadership in sustainability by ranking 3rd in Turkey and 1st in Cyprus.
In this prestigious ranking, where academic campuses are evaluated according to sustainability criteria, CIU has risen to 27th place in Europe, drawing attention worldwide with its environmentally sensitive projects and visionary approaches. CIU, which has participated in these evaluations for the last 7 years, continues to maintain its title as the most sustainable university on the island of Cyprus with its upward rise.
CIU Sustainability Office Coordinator Emre Soyer stated that the contribution of students, staff and academicians to this success of the university is very significant. Soyer explained that CIU Campus is a source of pride for Cyprus in the field of sustainability and emphasized that the university has been taking serious steps in the field of environmental sustainability since 2009. Stating that a significant part of the work is in line with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals declared by the United Nations (UN) in 2016, Soyer said that these projects are coordinated by the CIU Sustainability Office and that the projects are largely carried out with the active participation of students.
Emre Soyer, drawing attention to the fact that the university has carried out special projects in various areas, stated that they have made significant progress in the 6 headings of the UI GreenMetric ranking, such as transportation, education, research, energy, and waste management. Emphasizing that the scores received in the fields of transportation, education and research have increased this year, Soyer announced that the 100% recycling target in water use on campus has been achieved in line with the new targets, and that similar studies will continue in organic and inorganic waste management. He also stated that green infrastructure projects are ongoing and significant progress has been made towards the goal of having a carbon-neutral campus.
Stating that this vision of CIU is fully compatible with the European Union's Green Deal and the UN's sustainability goals, Soyer thanked the university administration, students and all national and international stakeholders for their contributions.
