About the Program
The doctoral program of the Department of Periodontology offered by the Institute of Graduate Studies and Research at Cyprus International University aims to train dentists, who have been trained with contemporary and international opportunities, who prepare the most suitable periodontological treatment plan for hard and soft dental tissue losses, who have advanced periodontology knowledge and who follow current developments. The periodontology doctorate program trains dentists to have the clinical and scientific equipment to provide advanced health services to society, to plan and conduct original research.

The education in this program will provide advanced theoretical knowledge, clinical experience, and scientific/academic competence related to Periodontology, Dental Implantology, and Community Oral and Dental Health.
Career Areas
Graduates of the periodontology doctorate program can continue their academic life with the title of "Doctor of Science" or they can work in public or private sector organizations. They can also open their clinic or practice.

This course aims to enable students to learn principles of periodontology, periodontal tissue elements, periodontal diagnosis methods, differences between inflamed and healthy gingiva, and gingival inflammation process. The students will understand the causes of preferring various diagnoses methods by classifying periodontal diseases in accordance with current classification criteria, and the etiological factors and possible mechanisms of the development of periodontal disease. They will learn different etiological factors of different periodontal diseases, the instruments used in periodontal treatment, and clinical periodontal treatment approaches. The students will have ability to analyze the selection criteria and possible outcomes of the case-specific preferred treatment protocol (surgical or non-surgical).

This course aims to enable students to learn diagnosing periodontal diseases, to collect clinical data, and to plan proper treatment. The students will understand what needs to be done within the scope of initial treatment (phase 1 treatment) and its impotance. They will recognize hand tools and devices used in non-surgical periodontal therapy. They will have information about occlusal alignment and splint making when necessary by controlling occlusion during diagnosis and treatment. They will have ability to assimilate the current approaches of non-surgical periodontal treatments and to treat patients who come to the clinic within this framework. They will learn how to explain the methods of providing proper oral hygiene to the patients after the treatment.

The aim of this course is to evaluate the anatomy, physiology, and interrelation of gingival and mucosal structures in periodontal disease and health. The students will be able to plan of surgical treatment and to apply advanced mucogingival surgical techniques. They will evaluate various donor sites for advanced mucogingival surgeries and choosing the most proper donor site. At the end of the course, the students will learn micro-surgery applications within the framework of minimal invasive approach and apply them on the patients. In addition, the students will be able to apply non-surgical methods in patients for whom surgical applications are contraindicated, and if necessary, to learn and perform hypersensitivity treatments due to gingival recession.

The aim of this course is learning the interactions between systemic diseases and periodontal diseases. At the end of the course, students will understand that the mouth is part of the body and that it can be affected by or involved in systemic pathological changes in the body. They learn that the effects of periodontal inflammation and/or infection as a focal source of infection are not limited to the oral cavity, but may be a risk marker for disease complications in many organs and systems. They know the bidirectional relationship between periodontal diseases and systemic diseases like diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, etc.

The aim of the oral implantology course is to provide students with general knowledge about basic oral implantology and to provide them with the competence to make decisions with a large number of patient treatment methods and possibilities, considering implant surgery and implant-supported prostheses. The student evaluates all aspects of the implant site, application and maintenance. As a result, students will have a comprehensive knowledge of the mechanical, surgical and antimicrobial treatment of peri-implant diseases. They will learn implant-supported prosthesis applications. Implant types, materials, surface properties of the implant; Peri-implant tissues, patient evaluation and selection, diagnostic methods, treatment plan, soft and hard tissue preparation, implant surgery, prosthetic approaches on implants, peri-implant diseases and treatments are within the scope of the course.

The aim of this course is to provide contemporary information about advanced oral implantology techniques such as soft and hard tissue grafting approaches. The students will be able to plan the treatment of patients with multiple implant needs and full mouth removable or fixed implant supported prosthesis. They will have information and be able to decide implant placement and implant loading times. After the given detailed information, they will have ability to plan and solve the complex cases that having moderate to advanced bone deficiency. The students will understand the multidisciplinary approach to decide when to do augmentation at the time of implant placement or before implant placement.

The aim of this course is to make the students are able to diagnose and treat peri-implantitis disease. At the end of the course, the students will be able to diagnose peri-implantitis with proper methods, to classify and treat the disease according to current classifications. They will learn radiological and clinical findings of peri-implantitis, the etiological factors of the disease, and treatment methods for peri-implantitis treatment. They will have a multidisciplinary perspective for the treatment of peri-implantitis by eliminating etiological factors and information about the prognosis of the affected dental implant before and after treatment. The students will be able to make alternative prosthetic and surgical treatment plans in case of loss of dental implant. They will gain theoretical and practical competence on cases.

The aim of this course is to examine the current information about periodontology. By giving a certain subject to the student, it is ensured that the student conducts detailed literature research on this subject. The student summarizes the collected information by filtering, shares it with the audience through oral presentation, opens it for discussion and concludes it. Thus, improving students' skills within the scope of scientific research and publication activities to increase presentation skills and competencies in using audio-visual tools. Students will have the ability to review and evaluate the literature, to teach the rules of writing thesis, and to develop the student's ability to present a scientific study. In addition, at the end of this course, students develop themselves in analyzing and interpreting the findings of scientific studies and identifying their deficiencies in the literature.

The aim of this course is to prepare presentations according research principles by addressing topics on the agenda in periodontology. Elective Courses
Entry Requirements
- The prospective student agrees that she/he shall apply to YÖK or YÖDAK for the equivalency of their undergraduate diplomas.
- The prospective student agrees that she/he shall apply to the Association of Turkish Cypriot Doctors in order to become a temporary member.
- The prospective international student agrees that she/he shall provide a Turkish Language Certificate or shall attend the Turkish Proficiency Test or shall study for a year for Turkish language education in order to continue their clinical studies. During their Turkish language study, students shall take one PhD course per semester for their PhD in Dentistry program.
- Prospective students agree that she/he shall provide an English Language Certificate (IELTS 6.0) or shall attend the English Proficiency Test which is organized by the School of Modern Languages. According to their success, students shall continue to the first year of the program or shall study the English language.
- Prospective students agree that she/he shall accept to work at least 20 hours per week during their PhD study and this clinical duty shall continue for 46 weeks per year.
- Prospective students agree that she/he shall accept buying clinical dentistry units with a written commitment.
- Surgery prospective students agree that she/he shall accept to comply with a two-semester (9 months) rotation duty in a full-fledged hospital.
- If necessary, Prospective students agree that she/he shall attend an online interview about the basic dental knowledge of the relevant field.
- Prospective students agree that she/he shall comply with clinical working programs with a written commitment.
- Prospective students agree that she/he shall comply with a written commitment to obeying professional and ethical responsibilities and not to cause malpractice conditions.
