Antimicrobial resistance: A Global Threat
Cyprus International University (CIU) Faculty of Medicine faculty member Prof. Dr. Figen Sarıgül stated that Türkiye and the TRNC are at risk due to high antibiotic consumption, and said, “Antibiotics are included in 3 out of every 10 prescriptions. The overuse of antibiotics increases resistance rates and causes treatment difficulties.”
Pointing out that the lack of effective antibiotics, especially for simple infections, creates a serious health problem, Sarıgül noted that the rational use of antibiotics is the key to preventing the development of resistance and protecting the immune system.
Prof. Dr. Sarıgül, speaking on the occasion of the World Antimicrobial Resistance Week, said, “Unnecessary antibiotic use not only increases individual health risks but also threatens public health.”
Sarıgül pointed out that it is critically important to take antibiotics only when necessary, as antibiotics are still powerful tools in the fight against many bacterial infections. She also stated the theme for the 2024 Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week (WAAW) is "Educate. Advocate. Act now."
Dr. Sarıgül stated that antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health crisis that occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial medicines and seriously threatens public health. This situation makes it difficult to treat infections, increases mortality rates and leads to significant economic losses.
Pointing out that 700 thousand people die each year from antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, Sarıgül also emphasized that this number could reach 10 million by 2050.
Sarıgül stated that awareness and education hold an important place in the combat against antimicrobial resistance, and that global events such as World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week provide important opportunities to raise public awareness.
In her statement, Sarıgül stated that to combat antimicrobial resistance, developing new antibiotics, implementing strict regulations and global cooperation are important, and said, “Coping with this crisis is only possible with individuals’ and governments’ determination and their being well-informed.”
